When it comes to interior design, many people think you just toss elements together in a way that magically makes them look good. However, there is much more to it than that. Interior designers naturally have a sense of what looks good, but they are also taught the reasons some things work and others don’t. It all boils down to a number of critical aspects of interior design.
The aspects used in interior design include various ways of looking at a space. All of these aspects must complement each other and work together in order for the space to be truly successful.
Here are five of the most important aspects used in the world of interior design:
Balance – Balance is the way the room’s weight is distributed. Too many objects in one side of the room make it appear off-balance. Interior designers consider whether to use radial, symmetrical, or asymmetrical balance when they are designing the space. Traditional designs tend to use symmetrical balance, while more modern looks use asymmetrical balance oftentimes. Radial balance is used only when the center of the room is the focal point.
Emphasis – The emphasis of the room, also known as the focal point, is very important because this is the part of the room the eye will naturally be drawn to. Rooms may have more than one area of emphasis, depending on the use of the room.
Unity – This aspect is what ties the entire room together. In some cases, the designer may use repetition in various elements, like patterns or colors. Too many competing elements can make a room feel unnecessarily chaotic, so there must be some type of unity that gives everything in the room a real purpose for being there.
Proportion – Most people have walked into a room and immediately felt like things were crowded. The use of oversized furniture in a room that is too small for it can create this feeling. The proportion of everything inside the room is important because it can make some things seem too large or too small for the space.
Movement – This aspect of interior design occurs in two ways. First, designers look at the way the eye naturally moves around the room. Does it have a nice flow to the eye movement, or does it seem choppy and inconsistent? Then there is also the factor of physical movement in the room. Is there too much furniture for the space? All of these elements play into this aspect of design.
Whenever considering how to use these five aspects, interior designers consider what is known as “The 3 F’s.” This phrase is “Form follows function,” and it’s important because the number one concern when designing any space is the function of it. Any room can look spectacular, but what good is the space really if the design has made using it prohibitive?
Of course there are many additional ways of looking at any space, and a professional interior designer knows how to make everything work together in a cohesive manner. The methods used by designers may seem like a foreign language to the layperson, but there really is a rhyme and a reason to it all. Understanding just a few of these aspects can help you make sense of exactly what your designer is doing when creating your space.
